Chevrolet is gearing up to once again prove that owning a North American small car is an appealing proposition. Carrying forward with the award-winning momentum started with the Chevrolet Cruze compact, the automaker has announced an all-new subcompact model called the Sonic, which will replace the Chevrolet Aveo in the automaker's lineup.

Sonic will be a youthful, inspired small car designed to compete with models like the Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Accent and Honda Fit. Available in both a five-door and sedan model, Chevrolet's committed to ensuring there is a 2012 Sonic that is just right for any need or budget. A variety of connectivity features and option packages help the Sonic connect readily with today's younger shopper and thorough attention to driving dynamics means it is a small car that does big things for driving pleasure.

"The all-new Chevrolet Sonic was developed to be fun to drive, with ride and handling characteristics not expected in this segment - in fact, ride and handling tuning was done by the Corvette team," said Marc Comeau, vice president of Chevrolet Canada. "Sonic delivers agile, athletic performance, thanks to its available 138 horsepower, 1.4-litre turbo engine and six-speed transmission, yet does so with great fuel efficiency."

Best of all, the Sonic is a sound choice for shoppers looking to support the local economy. Comeau explains, "Chevrolet is the only company building a small car in North America. We believe the Sonic will bring substance to the segment, with progressive styling, performance and value that will change perceptions of what a small car can be in North America."

Power will come from a standard 1.8-litre, four-cylinder powerplant, or a new 1.4-litre turbocharged Ecotec engine that is shared with the Chevrolet Cruze. Both engines are designed for optimal performance and mileage, while the turbocharged unit answers the call of driving enthusiasts with 138 horsepower backed by plenty of torque. A manual transmission will be available on both engines, as will an optional automatic.

Chevrolet also says the Sonic Sedan offers segment-best trunk capacity that is actually greater than most compact cars. Both hatchback and sedan variants offer better rear-seat roominess than the Ford Fiesta and a virtually flat-folding rear seat allows the Sonic to maximize cargo capacity for complete versatility.

When the Sonic hits dealer lots, consumers are likely to be delighted by its slew of uncharacteristically generous equipment and value. On the safety front, the Sonic includes up to 10 air bags, standard antilock brakes, electronic brake force distribution, brake assist and available OnStar with Automatic Crash Response. Bluetooth phone functionality helps reduce driver distraction for further safety.

Available feature content includes a sunroof, remote start, heated seats, 17-inch wheels and plenty more. An upscale and modern interior design will likely become one of the Sonic's most powerful assets and drivers can enjoy steering wheel mounted audio controls and a unique racecar inspired instrument readout with LCD display and an analog tachometer. Look for a slew of dealer-installed accessories for further customization after the Sonic's launch.

Production of the 2012 Sonic begins later this year at the General Motors Orion Assembly Center in Michigan. Keep your eyes peeled for the first units to arrive at dealer lots soon!
